It's NOT about the smoker, it's about the smoke!

Rural Kentuckians are more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke at work. Smoke-free policies save lives by protecting people from the toxins in secondhand smoke.

A Smoke-Free Hickman County would protect every person’s right to breathe clean air.

Secondhand smoke and the harmful chemicals in it are known causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Respiratory Infections, ear infections, and asthma attacks in infants and children.

They are also known causes of Heart Disease, Stroke, and Lung Cancer in adult nonsmokers.

Tobacco-Free Kids

For more than 20 years, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has fought to protect children and save lives from the #1 cause of preventable death: tobacco use.

Tobacco-Free School

Educate students about the dangers of using tobacco products, maintain a healthy school environment, and implement evidence-based programs to reduce tobacco use among youth.

Smoke-Free Business

Why Do Smoke-free Workplaces Save Money? There is no longer any doubt in the scientific community that smoke-free laws have no negative impact on bars and restaurants.

At Risk Population

Everyone, deserves the freedom to breathe safe, healthy air. Veterans living in rural areas are more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke than those living in urban or suburban areas.

THE HICKMAN COUNTY TIMES

Taking tobacco to task dates back years ago

By BERRY CRAIG

The Fulton-Hickman County Agency for Substance Abuse Policy (ASAP), a coalition of community individuals and organizations, wants the County to ban smoking in public buildings.

No doubt, Robert Summers of the old Columbus Dispatch would have endorsed an antismoking ordinance. About 150 years ago, his paper ran a frontpage story trashing tobacco.

“One man has no more right to void his tobacco smoke into the face of another man than he has to void his saliva,” the un-bylined story said.

Fulton-Hickman ASAP has opted for a kinder, gentler approach to winning hearts and minds. “Our slogans include, ‘It’s not about the smoker, it’s about the smoke, ‘Everyone deserves to breathe clean air’ and ‘Clean air shows you care,'”explained Sarah Story, a Fulton-Hickman ASAP member.
